Care and Cleaning
Spinel isn’t a gemstone most consumers come across on a regular basis. Some might say that spinel is one of the most under appreciated
gemstones on the planet.
Spinel forms in a variety of colours, from vivid reds and striking pinks, to rich blues and royal purples to hues of orange and bluish green. It even comes in some more usual hues like grey and black. Many spinels can rival even the finest rubies and sapphires in colour and were for many hundreds of years actually mistaken for those gems. Unlike most other coloured gemstones, spinels also display a fantastic sparkle, close to that of a diamond.
One of the most famous spinels in the world is the staggering 170ct ‘Black Prince’s Ruby’. Given to Prince Edward of Woodstock in 1367 it now adorns the British Imperial State Crown.
You may be wondering “why is it called the black prince’s ruby if it’s in fact a spinel?” Well, it’s because spinel wasn’t identified as a different mineral to ruby until 1783, before then gemstones were classified by their appearance only, so most red to dark pink gemstones would have been considered to be ruby.
Spinel is one of few gemstones that is often sold untreated and completely natural.
Some spinel may be subjected to heat treatment to enhance their colour but this treatment is stable (permanent) under normal wear.
Spinel is also a hardy gemstone, at 8 on the Moh’s hardness scale, making it an ideal gemstone for everyday wear.
