Care and Cleaning
Tourmaline is a fascinating gemstone family, whose varieties occurs in an array of colours and combinations of colours.
Tourmaline is the mineral family and there are numerous species within that family, and numerous varieties within those species.
Rubellite is the name given to deep pink to red, purplish red, orangy red and brownish red tourmalines.
Dark blue to greenish blue tourmaline is named Indicolite.
Paraíba is a vivid light blue, green and greenish blue tourmaline found in Brazil.
Then there are parti and watermelon coloured tourmalines, natural combinations of different colours displayed in the same stone.
Some tourmalines can even display chatoyancy, more commonly referred to as a cat’s eye effect.
Tourmalines are relatively durable gemstones, they are great for everyday wear if worn carefully.
Tourmalines are sensitive to high temperatures and sudden temperature changes can cause damaged to the stone. For this reason tourmaline should not be steam or ultrasonic cleaned.
Tourmaline jewellery can be cleaned at home using gemstone cloths of dips or warm soapy water and a soft brush.
Some tourmalines are treated to enhance their colour. This treatment is generally undetectable and is stable (permanent) during normal wear.
If you would like to learn more about gemstone treatments, what these treatments are and what they do, as well as which treatments are stable and how to look after gemstones with unstable treatments, please visit our ‘Gemstone Guide’ page.
