White Gold
White gold is not found naturally, it is created by mixing yellow gold with other metals such as silver and palladium which lightens the colour. Even after this process white gold alloys are still slightly yellow in colour so a layer of a metal called rhodium is added over the top to give white gold its final finish.
Though rhodium is a durable metal, this coating will eventually wear off, exposing the light yellow coloured gold underneath and a new layer of rhodium will need to be applied. Please keep this in mind when decided to buy any white gold jewellery.
Care and Cleaning
Tanzanite is a relative newcomer to the world of coloured gemstones, having only been was discovered in 1962 in Tanzania. About five years later a large deposit was found in the remote region of Merelani in Northern Tanzania and this area remains the only known source of gem quality tanzanite in the world.
The gem was named by former Tiffany & Company president, Henry Platt.
Tanzanite remains a very popular gemstone, its lovely violetish purple to blue hues and its potential for high sparkle set it aside from other well known purple gemstones such as amethyst.
Tanzanite is a fairly delicate gem, with a hardness rating of 6 to 7. For these reasons we do not recommend that tanzanite jewellery be worn everyday.
If it is to be worn everyday, in an engagement ring for example, extra care should be taken. We recommend removing tanzanite jewellery when doing any kind of manual labor, when cleaning or working with chemicals and avoid exposing the stone to sudden temperature changes.
Due to its sensitivity to sudden temperature changes, tanzanite should never be steam or ultrasonic cleaned. You can clean your tanzanite jewellery from home using gem or jewellery cleaning cloths or dips which can be purchased from us or by using warm soapy water and a soft brush.
Tanzanite is almost always heat treated to improve its colour but this is a stable (permanent) treatment that cannot be reversed under normal wear.
If you would like to learn more about gemstone treatments, what these treatments are and what they do, as well as which treatments are stable and how to look after gemstones with unstable treatments, please visit our 'gemstone guide' page.
