Care and Cleaning
Ruby is a highly durable gemstone and is ideal for everyday wear.
Dubbed the "King of Precious Stones" by ancient civilisations, ruby still remains one of the most popular gemstones amongst consumers across the world.
Care should always be taken whilst wearing and storing your ruby jewellery.
You should always store your ruby jewellery away from other coloured gemstones as ruby and sapphire may scratch gems with a lower hardness rating ( this includes all gemstones apart from diamond)
Around 95% of all ruby on the open market today are heat treated to improve their apparent colour and sometimes their clarity. Heat treatment in corundum is stable (permanent) under normal wear and can often be undetectable so always assume a ruby has been heat treated unless it has paperwork from a reputable gem lab which states otherwise.
Many rubies have natural fractures or surface reaching cavities or these may be created during heat treatment. To improve the stones clarity and durability it is common for surface reaching cavities in ruby to be filled with a transparent epoxy resin, lead-based glass or sometimes oil. These treatments can be easily detected by a trained gemologist but nevertheless they should always be disclosed by a retailer (treatments are disclosed below if applicable). If a ruby has been cavity or fractured filled it is not safe to put in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner as these cleaners may damage or remove the filling. They should also not be exposed to high temperatures or harsh chemicals during wear.
